Jo’s Monday Walk: Me, You, and Agatha Christie

I’ve been wanting to do Jo’s Monday Walk FOREVER! One week I deliberately went out over the weekend to photo the “Hood.” When I returned home and downloaded all my photos they weren’t there! What was that about? Then the weather took a turn for the worse and I don’t do “Turned Worse Weather” at all.  So I decided no matter what, this Monday would be “the Monday,” even if I had to improvise.

As many of you know I am a big Agatha Christie follower. I love the way she writes, the way she thinks, and how she lived! Last summer I visited her summer home, Greenway, in Devon, UK and then later in the year my hubby visited the Harrogate Spa, in Harrogate, UK, where she turned up after her mysterious disappearance. Posts followed. You can find them on my blog tagged under Agatha Christie.

But, today we are going with Agatha to Egypt. When Agatha was a young woman, she set off for Egypt, with her mother as a chaperone. I think Agatha was going for the excitement of a new adventure. She hadn’t had much to look forward to after the death of her father. She lived with her mother and grandmother and they were all very close. The Miss Marple character in her books is based on her grandmother and her crony friends. Anyway, back to Agatha. When she and her mother arrived in Egypt, they made the rounds of parties held by the English socialites. Agatha’s mother was on the prowl for a husband for Agatha. Nothing came of the trip and Agatha had been so involved with socializing and partying at the time, she saw very little of Egypt. So today, you and I, and Agatha are going to see just what all she missed on her very first trip!

There still is a lot of traffic in Cairo! Maybe in Agatha’s day there would have been more camels mixing in the fray!

I’m sure she would have checked into a hotel as elegant as the Sofitel, but I’m not sure there would have been a Christmas tree and garlands!

Or, if there would have been as many bright lights and tall buildings!

But, we would hear the calls to prayer………

We’d want to walk through the market stalls to shop……..

And then stop for a quick snack to keep us going!

We make our way to the Pyramids next…..

This is how close some are to the city now!

And some are further away…….

And now for a ride into the desert…….. but first pick out your camel!

All under the watchful eye of the mounted camel police……..

Agatha returned to England and met the dashing officer, Archie Christie, at a Christmas party, who she later married and then divorced after a bitter event. But, she also returned to the Middle East several times.  On a trip to the site of Ur in 1930, Agatha met Max Mallowan, an archaeologist.  After their marriage they worked together in Syria and Iraq, and Agatha participated in the archaeology work by cleaning and conserving objects, taking photographs, and taking field notes.  The sites she visited became a source for many of her detective stories such as Murder on the Orient Express (1934,) Murder in Mesopotamia (1936), Death on the Nile (1937),  Appointment With Death (1938), Death Comes as the End (1944), and  Come Tell Me How You Live. (1946)  As you can tell Agatha would have loved our walk today and I hope you have enjoyed our jaunt through Cairo!

This is just one of many posts for Jo’s Monday Walk. Look HERE to see where others are headed this week! Enjoy!

Thank you so much for a wonderfully innovative approach to my walks 🙂 I have smiled my way through it, and I’ve never been to Cairo so it was an education too 🙂 Now- how do you go about choosing the right camel, I wonder? Just in case… 🙂 Have a happy week!

I’ve never been to Cairo so it’s been lovely to see some of it through your eyes. The facts about Agatha Christie are interesting, I’ve been a big fan of her books ever since my mum bought me one to read on holiday back in 1971. Love the comment to Jo about how to choose the right camel 🙂

  4. If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie, maybe you can tell me more about the clever and capable Lucy Eyelesbarrow. She appeared in the 4:50 to Paddington and I’ve been wondering if she appears in any other books? I’d like to read more about here — at least find out who she married. So cruel of AC to answer that question at the end with just a wink!

Thanks for the neat little tour of Egypt. I’m sure she was glad to get back and see the country properly.
