I have stopped watching the news….I have dropped all social media, except for my blog, which I try to keep to positive vibes…. there are a lot of folks in the world, who are everyday folks, just trying to provide food and shelter and love……….they are trying to make a living…….keep their kids educated and basically just take care of their families, without an agenda. Me too. I think there is more of us…. Just trying to live our lives….. So, I would like to take the time to focus on one person a week to bring us together, to celebrate ordinary folks. We are trying to live our lives under extraordinary circumstances…..

I’m starting with the monument to Breogán in La Coruña , Spain, today!
Breogán is a character from the medieval Christian history of Ireland. The Gaels wandered the earth for 440 years until they sailed to Iberia. Breogán founded a city he called Brigantia and built a great tower, a place to watch out over the water. On a clear winter’s evening, his son, Íth, was gazing out in all four directions and thought he saw a solitary island sitting in a mist. He and his nine brothers set out to find the island, but were attacked by a local group of nobleman and Íth was killed. His body was returned to Brigantia and his family set out for revenge. They found the killers and went on to the island, taking it from the Irish pagan gods, and called it Ireland, settling there for good. Now this makes a nice story, and is considered myth, however, a genetic study conducted in 2006 at Oxford University concluded that the majority of people in the British Isles are descended from neolithic farmers coming from the coastal northern regions of Spain. This also showed up in my DNA study and I wondered how in the world I had any Spanish ancestry! So I must be related to Breogán!
Breogán has his very own monument in La Coruña, Spain, looking across the sea! You can see the Lookout Tower behind him too………
Going into the city of La Coruña, this window is what drew me into the shoemaker’s shop………look at those tiny, tiny, tiny shoes and sandals on the top shelf in the window!
And, here he is! Workin’ away! Surely, he is related to Breogán too! Probably!

That’s a good tale to go with your photos, I beat that guy even “sweats” leather! A couple of years back I got fully involved in tracing my ancestry and even had my dna tested. This showed my origins to be more Northern Europe, though possibly from the coast of Brittany too which is not surprising since my “near” ancestors were from Cornwall. Have you done any genealogy?

I only have 37,000 family members in my genealogy research! I’ve done family history for years! Traced my GGrandmother’s family to Switzerland (from 1600’s) and have birth records from way, way, way, way back! MY DNA says I’m 50% Scottish/Irish, the Scots traveling to Northern Ireland and living a long time, and then arriving in US by the 1700’s. The rest of me is close to 40% English and then a tad of French thrown in for good measure! And that tiniest of Spanish too! I have loads of stuff on all my families! AND STORIES!

We flew into Glasgow/out of Edinburgh and mostly toured the western side and Geo tour. Absolutely loved the stunning countryside…probably more than the cities but would return either way. Let’s hope for being able to travel again soon!

I could listen to their accent all day 🙂 and when the static in the world seems too much, I recall seeing a lone house sheltered at the base of one of those majestic mountains and long for the serenity amidst the rugged beauty… Truly, Scotland runs deep in my veins.

I should post the photo I have of my GGGrandfather who came from Northern Ireland (before that Scotland) He was a Protestant Minister, escaping religious persecution, but boy oh boy, did he look mean!

I tried both. The small one is saved as webp, I knew this doesn’t work. I tried “showing the grafic” and it saved in jpg. Hurrah! But I couldn’t open it 😩

This is really interesting for me. When I had my DNA done it showed a fair percentage from the Iberian Peninsula and I wasn’t sure why. But I did know I had Irish blood (my great grandmother was from there) so maybe that’s the reason for the Iberian bit too?

OH MY! What a story! And one that I think needs to be shared! I don’t know if I would ever be able to go back to that prison had I or my family been there…..Chum Mey is looking good now, which is a miracle in itself! I think we need to be wary of our world today……this won’t be the last time this happens I fear! People want POWER over us!

I didn’t know about that bit of folklore. It’s interesting what those DNA studies turn up – it must be grand to find a connection with history 🙂

Oh, Sandy what a wonderful post! Aren’t markets the best thing ever for people watching? I think so……you really get the life of the village! That barber chair, no telling how old it is……I bet it was passed through the family, don’t you? Every week I can’t wait to read all the posts and see the photos! I didn’t know about that paste either………very interesting….and you’re right, that child looked like she had had that done more than once and didn’t like it!
