Thursday Doors in Savoca, Sicily

Why are we on a mountain in Sicily in a small village named  Savoca, this beautiful, hot morning, you ask? Well, this week it’s all about the filming of Godfather II. Francis Ford Coppola thought the town of Corleone in Sicily was too big for parts of the movie so he chose the little mountain village of Savoca instead. Yesterday we saw Vitelli’s Bar, where Micheal asked for the hand of Appollonia in marriage. If you want to see and read about that adventure look HERE. But, today I am focusing on the Doors of Savoca! My first door is way on the bottom left corner of this photo…….. I wanted to give you an idea of the terrain…….and a lonesome door……….

And then a look from the top……….

Here is a door inside Vitelli’s Bar…………..

and another door in the bar………notice the lemons……….lots of lemony items to be found here………

and a look outside the bar………

Many of the small shops offer Godfather souvenirs………..Did you know that every time an orange is shown in the Godfather Movies, someone dies?  I don’t see any oranges here just lemons, thank goodness……

I think the white-washed stone made this door more attractive……..

Be sure to keep all your old roof tiles……

Now this was a great door!

This door had a very good view………

I liked this window so I decided to add it just because………and there is a teeny-tiny purplish door next to it!

These doors told a story………

This door did too………………

These doors were no longer needed………

and this door shows the village used to be surrounded by a wall for protection………

This is my favorite cubby-hole door…….with climbing rose, ferns and cactus!

the newish home among the ruins………..with a long extended pipe of some sort is interesting………

and I had to show this last photo to get you ready for tomorrow’s post. We are walking from the village higher up the mountain to retrace the path of Michael’s wedding party from that church on top! The Chiesa di San Nicolò is where the famous wedding was photographed! Can’t wait to see that! Grab your water! It’s getting hot up here!

Have a great door week! Look here to see what others are doing for Norm’s Doors!

It’s easy to do Norm’s Doors. Photograph some doors and post them to Thursday Doors on Thursday!

PS All photos were taken on our IPhones this year……..we are traveling lighter!

  4. Are you a movie buff? Love the sights here, especially the arches, even more than the doors:) There is so much atmosphere sitting on a patio covered with leaves! Again, a fabulous post Blog Friend!

    1. I do like The Godfather movies and it really is fascinating how small these towns are! I don’t know where they would have put all the “stars” and all the crew! Or where they would have eaten at! Sovoca is really really small and hard to get to!

  5. Such a beautiful place. Fantastic doors but my favourite shots are the interior of the bar – so inviting.

  7. I didn’t know that about the oranges, but I think I’ve only seen the first movie twice but many, many years apart, and the other two probably only once each. I’d love to have lots of lemons! Glad you didn’t find a horse head in your bed!
