My Thursday Doorscursion Post today is featuring Mainz, Germany. All of my photos were taken in the three and a half mile, half-moon shaped historic district that lies along the Rhine River. The architecture is fantastic, revealing half timbered buildings, several historic churches and cellars known for their famous wines. During WWII most of the city was destroyed and the city was in the French zone after the war. Great effort was taken to rebuild the historic city center. Today it is a popular tourist attraction. It wouldn’t be right to get just a photo of the doors without getting the entire effect of the building! So let’s start here!
Many of the buildings are a pink-peachy-orange-salmon color, which is very beautiful! And there is definitely a mixture of architectural styles. I have so many photos of doors from Mainz I will divide up my posts, but I will start out with the PPOS colors with our first look at the Mainz Cathedral.
It looks like a castle in a fairy tale! If anyone would ask what church do you attend just say the Pink One! I think that would cover them all; the Mainz Cathedral, St Boniface, Karmeister Kloster, St Quintin Church, St Iznaz, and St Augustine’s.
Walking in the Old Town or historic district is just enchanting! The city is not too big or too small! Following the cobbled streets we find the Marketplatz with lots of outdoor eateries!
In addition there is the old blended with the new. I really prefer the old, don’t you? This old building will not give up, just tuck it in there!
And there is netting to keep the birds from perching!
Many of the buildings feature ornate decorations and motif paintings! Also, did you notice there are bicycles everywhere?
And how about the decorative globed street lights? Wow!
It is also nice to sit a spell by the river and watch the world go by! The river cruise boats dock here too.
Or you can stroll along the lane of the knobby plane trees!
When you get tired you can stop at one of the wine venues. Mainz is known for their great wines!
Or finish up your day with a strawberry sundae! I hope you enjoyed our short stroll through Mainz! See you next week with doors of a different color!

Beautiful city, beautiful photos The city reminds me of Colmar, France which, because of its location, has been part of Germany and part of France any number of times.

Janet, yes Mainz is very similar to Colmar! We were in Colmar in 2006 and I didn’t take as many photos back then, but thanks for reminding me. I will have to look and see if I have any doors for Thursday Doors! I do remember taking a lot of photos of storks though, Ha Ha. We have been in Alsace several times doing research on my family, who emigrated from there in 1846.

I have a *thing* about turrets or any rounded architectural feature and Mainz seems to have an abundance of them! The Cathedral is spectacular … yes, more like a castle. Love!
