Thursday Doors: St Ives, Cornwall

I feel like going to the sea! Let’s see the Doors of St Ives, Cornwall today! The houses have a few things in common……..they are made of tabby or……..

stone and there are cobbled paths every where!

But, I must share more info about this cottage……the Cornish Cottage…This is where we stayed….it is at the end of a row of old fishermen cottages. It was totally modern and lovely inside and perfect for us, except……

See how the lane bisects? The larger path goes to the right and the smaller one to the left, following a row of bins. Our cottage sat in the middle of these two paths……This path led to the main street of St Ivesl. Coming from the main street UP……. the larger path took you to the top of a steep hill, to reach the car park, the cemetery and the sea! I only made this trek once in 7 days! But, for most of the tourists it was down in the morning and up it at night! And needless to say, by nightfall, most of the folks had had a pretty good day and were now tired, rowdy or drunk. Or all three and talking LOUDLY! Then in the wee hours of the morning we would hear the clunking of glass, because we were right behind a pub and that was the lane of bins behind it. The men would show up and empty bin after bin of glass bottles….. Clank, Clank, Clank! Following that, the empty metal beer barrels would be rolled out and down the street and the newly filled barrels would be rolled in. We could start our day and end it on schedule! We laugh about it now !

This door has quite the steep step!

This was one of my favorite doors!

This arch was marked…….

I wanted you to see this photo too…..There is a black door at the bottom, but I was waiting and waiting on that seagull to settle down so I could take the photo. Oh yeah, you must like sea gulls if you go to St Ives too! They also make a lot of noise!

To experience the full flavor of St Ives listen to this!

So, on vacation it always pays to have a sense of humor……life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get! (From Forrest Gump)

I hope you have enjoyed a few doors from St Ives today!

St. Ives is one of my favourite places and I did take quite a few photos of the quaint buildings and doors but cant find the disc I saved them on. Damn! Your photos show how colourful the place is with it’s flowers, whitewashed and stone buildings and those weathered roof tiles. I especially like the old weathered wooden door with the big iron hinges.

Very pretty Cornish cottages and lanes 🙂 But you talk about ‘the main street of Cornwall’. Cornwall is a county with many towns and villages, each of which will have a main street. So I’m curious which village you stayed in?

    1. OMG! Sarah! Thank you for asking this…….I had Cornwall on my mind, I guess, and could not let it go! We were in St Ives! We are getting ready to take two vaca’s, one this week and then a big one ten days after that, and I have over 12 posts in different stages on my computer I am working on to pre-schedule. I am a little rattled right now! Im glad you look over my posts! I guess I need a proof reader too! Cady

Ah yes, now I can see this is St Ives 🙂 A lovely town but so popular, I can see why this could be a noisy location. It’s above the beach in the old fishing village area I think? If ever you go there again I can recommend an apartment at the other end of the main street, near the Barbara Hepworth Studio. We found it relatively quiet and a lovely place to stay 🙂

You did say St. Ives, early on, in fact. I enjoyed all these doors; each one has its own character. My favorite is the first shot, the corner door behind the corner gate.

That’s odd – I’d have placed this at the other end of the main street, above the beach. I must be wrong!!

      6. No, it was down where all the shops were, the beach was way at the other end…….Cady

Wonderful seaside doors.I do like seagulls, so I’m glad you included that little guy. I love the corner gate to the first home. This looks like such a wonderful place to visit. Thanks for sharing with us at Thursday Doors.

LOVE the variety of the walls here! Don’t know if I would let my plants in front of the window get so big, taking much light away on the inside. The arch is noteworthy, and love that wall there too. It’s funny how the places relatively closeby (the Netherlands) where I lived before), one thinks of to visit the last! Such a romantic ambience here. Jesh

  9. I think my favorite is the one with the high step. Is this what you meant by “tabby”: a cement made of lime, sand or gravel, and oyster shells ? I’d never heard that term applied to anything but a cat before. As for the noise, our younger daughter and I once stay a night above a pub in England. Good price, good food, lots of noise. 🙂

    1. Janet, that is what the folks in the South call that kind of building mixture……..it was used on many of the homes in Savannah and Charleston, because there was sooooo much sand and shells! We stayed overhead a pub in Ireland on the last night in the country……..need I say more? We laugh about that too!

  10. Hmm, very pretty, but not sure about the cottage! When we stayed in St Ives we were at the top of the big hill out of town so a long way to climb back after dinner, but much quieter.

    1. Was it by the cemetery? There were many nice cottages up there! That’s where our landlady lived and where we parked our car! But it was hike alright!

      1. It was a B&B. Just looked it up and it was on the same road as the cemetery but way past it.

  13. I’ve never been to Cornwall, it’s on my bucket list as I wouldn’t have to fly, which I hate. Your photos are gorgeous, all that lovely stonework. I’m used to lots of seagulls as I’ve lived most of my life in coastal towns, I find them very entertaining, except when they’re after my food, lol.

    1. I live in such a small town and we don’t even have much traffic! So, anything we hear in the villages on vaca sounds loud to us! I like the sound of seagulls, but they are always making noise! At least these were! Do they ever sleep? Cady

      1. I think they work in shifts as we use to hear them at night, too.

I’ll blame it on spending my days with toddlers and PreKinders, but I’ve now got the nursery rhyme, As I was going to St. Ives, saw a man with 7 wives…… lol Nice to see doors from there. Enjoyed your photos!
