I have stopped watching the news….I have dropped all social media, except for my blog, which I try to keep to positive vibes…. there are a lot of folks in the world, who are everyday folks, just trying to provide food and shelter and love……….they are trying to make a living…….keep their kids educated and basically just take care of their families, without an agenda. Me too. I think there is more of us…. Just trying to live our lives….. So, I would like to take the time to focus on one person a week to bring us together, to celebrate ordinary folks. We are trying to live our lives under extraordinary circumstances…..

Mardi Gras looked a little different this year in New Orleans, as Louisiana has prohibited parades due to COVID concerns. But, the folks are getting in the spirit of things by decorating the outside of their homes instead! Mardi Gras, the celebration that marks the day before Lent, has long been associated with New Orleans, but actually began in Mobile, Alabama in 1699. However, Louisiana is the only state to have officially declared Mardi Gras a legal holiday. In the 1950’s, a New Orleans bakery popularized hiding a porcelain baby (representing Jesus) inside a cake, from an old french tradition dating back to the 18th century. Today, the King Cake, a slightly sweet cinnamon bread, baked and sold during Mardi Gras, comes with a trinket inside made of plastic! The person who finds the trinket in the piece of cake is responsible for providing the King Cake next year! This woman was celebrating a church event in November in Columbus, Georgia, when my hubby asked if he could take her photo! She said sure! She reminded me of Mari Gras! Just having some fun!

Now THAT is colourful but I’d better not comment on its suitability for colour splash 😂. I’ve been to New Orleans once with my late son, he was just 14 and I took him to see a Super Bowl it was Broncos vs 49ers and we were big Joe Montana fans. (1989/90?) It was a great experience! Football, food, jazz, Mississippi, etc etc.

I want you to know I DID another Splash photo yesterday! Oh, I bet you have wonderful memories of that trip with him! I have never been to Mardi Gras, but I have been to New Orleans on vacation and loved it! One year, I did work several rotations in Texas, so the Canadien nurses could go to Mardi Gras. They had a blast! BIG drinkers those gals, could drink any guy under the table! Anyway, they brought me back beads! My hubby went to Mardi Gras with the Purdue football team when he was in college! Said once was enough! Very crowded and rowdy!

I seem to remember having a drink called Hurricane on Bourbon Street and crayfish in a bar there. It was a bit difficult going into some places as my son was only 14!

Oh yeah, you have to drink Hurricanes there! I don’t know what the laws were then for kids during Mardi Gras. In some states you can’t take them into bars at all and some places if they sell food you can………..everyone is carded….. I am still carded at my age! Mardi Gras is wild! Probs, not too many kids of any age under 21 there!

Oh Alice, I have the TV off as well! I do watch documentaries on Netflix. This week we watched a 4 part series about the Cecil Hotel in LA’s Skid Row……..OMG! That’s all I am gonna say about it! Ok, and that you could book a room there from EXPEDIA! For travelers, it would be an eye opener, as it was for an English couple!

Very upbeat and cheerful. I can’t say I’ve ever had any desire to be at Mardi Gras. That many people and that much partying just aren’t my thing. 🙂

I am not crazy about crowds either, but when you are in New Orleans at any time of year you get that particular vibe! Happy and ready to party! And you can get your drinks to go!

I’ve had a Hurricane too and walked down Bourbon with a cocktail to go. Just had to do it. I think the phrase that the barman quoted at Pat O’Brien’s was ““One and you’re flying, two and you’ve crashed, three and we ask you to sign a waiver absolving the barman of all responsibility”.

The phones and the games on them certainly capture the attention of everybody using them! Especially this young, young child! It’s almost scary! When the Apple stores were OPEN before COVID it was amazing seeing all the little ones in there that knew more about the phones and tablets than I did!

Margaret, I loved reading this post! And, thank you for sharing it on One Person From Around the World too! I have never been to India, but I would like to go! These experiences are trying but memorable! When we went to Turkey a carpet salesman followed us around for three hours even waiting for us after a museum tour so he could hound us some more! I was soooooo rattled. But, then I came across a woman sitting on a bench, who spoke English, when more salesmen came round…..She said to them in a voice you could hear 3 miles a way……..No, I have all the carpets I need thank you! She was FIRM and LOUD and they all slouched away and we had a lovely conversation…….
