I would much prefer walking over the bridge in my Featured Photo! Heights is not one of my favorite things! But, when I was in Bilbao, Spain I signed up for a tour that included a bridge…….I didn’t read the fine print (as usual) and didn’t realize until we walked there that you actually had to walk over the bridge to complete the tour and get back to the ship!
The last thing on our agenda for the day was the Vizcaya Bridge and gondola. We had a choice of walking across the top of the open-air, open-bottom bridge or taking the gondola. Guess which one I chose? It was designed by the Basque architect, Alberto de Palacio, and completed in 1893. The 148 foot high bridge with its span of 525 feet, merges 19th-century ironworking traditions with the then new lightweight technology of twisted steel ropes. It was the first bridge in the world to carry people and traffic on a high suspended gondola and was used as a model for many similar bridges in Europe, Africa and America, only a few of which survive. With its innovative use of lightweight twisted steel cables, it is regarded as one of the outstanding architectural iron constructions of the Industrial Revolution and is a Unesco World Heritage Site! There were several in our group who walked across the top, but the tiny, tiny elevator to get to the top was a no go for me! The stairs to walk up weren’t my thing either….
The gondola just glided over that water!
I would have been fine just, sitting by the fountain…….
But, some of my ship mates went up the stairs to get to the top of the walking bridge………
It was bad enough for me going over the water in the the gondola!

An interesting bridge which reminds me of the Meccano set I had as a child! All nuts and bolts! Nice thing to visit on an excursion from a cruise too 👍🍷

Oh, we have had fabulous excursions on the cruises! No more than 15 people in the groups and focused on what the lectures are about on the ships! I have learned a lot! We get to pick and choose from dozens of itineraries. Some sound so interesting that hubby and I go our separate ways, his and her excursions! This was one of those times!

Thanks Sheree for finding my error! I was so concentrating on spelling Bilbao correctly, that I then flubbed the country! I’ve been working on a lot of posts from different countries! Portugal’s on my mind I guess!

I would have been with the passengers who walked the stairs and crossed the bridge. My husband would have stayed with you on the Gondola. Thanks for sharing the history of the bridge along with your photos.

I’d much rather sit near the fountain and watch other people parade up and down that thing in the sky. Now, the wood bridge in your lead photo is more my kind of thing. It even LOOKS safe as well as picturesque.

It’s a very similar model to the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough. I used to cross back and forth to work in the gondola at one stage in my life. It was possible to walk over the top on a not too windy day but I never did. I think it was higher than this one. My excuse and I’m sticking to it 🙂 🙂

I wouldn’t be thrilled with that either and would much prefer the one to the left. At least the high one looks like it has high sides.

I don’t think I’d have any problem crossing this bridge, nor with the tiny lift (the stairs however are another matter!) But the gondola looks more fun so I would probably join you there 😉
