Haugesund, Norway: On the Waterfront

Did I mention it was a cold, blustery, full  on, red-cheek day, in August, when we visited Haugesund? Well it was, but we began our tour of the city with a brisk walk of the harbor, that went on and on, with boat after boat!

The old warehouses along the harbor have been beautifully restored and maintained……….

I thought the shape of the houses had a Dutch influence…….probably German more like……….

Here you get a jist of the walk and all the boats……

The oldies…….

and the newbies………

and some for entertaining………..

You would have to remember where you docked………

There were tall masts……..

and lanterns for the sea……

and lots of rigging……….

and pulleys……

and ropes from everywhere to everywhere………

Some boats offer a good bit of information….. ……

and anchors hitch a ride…….

old wooden boats…..were my favorite…….

A few of our passenger friends decided to take a tour of the harbor………way, way, way too cold for me!

Now, I don’t know much about boats or rigging or rope or lights or anchors, but I do know Marlyn Monroe when I see her! On the waterfront, next to the Rica Maritim Hotel, you will find a monument to Marilyn Monroe ! Why is she here in Haugesund? It seems her grandfather, Martin Mortensen, was born here in 1861 and emigrated to the United States in 1878, seeking a better life. The monument was presented to the city in 1992, the thirtieth anniversary of her death, and is the symbol of the large film festival, which is held here every August. If she wasn’t wearing heels, I’d  say she almost looks like a mermaid!

I hope you have enjoyed our walk today! I need a cuppa to get warmed up! See you soon!
