We’ve arrived in Haugesund on a very blustery, Sunday morning! This is a metropolis compared to the last few stops we have made in Norway! Haugesund once had a bustling herring industry, but now has gone over to the petroleum industry…..and I think the town has lost part of its charm because of it. There are other reasons, too, that I will explain…….but let’s get on to some doors! The houses along the waterway look like this!
There is row after row of fishing boats in the Smedasundet (Harbor Waterway)
and many have those itsy-bitsy doors…………and big, big ropes!
Walking into the town, from the harbor, it is glass, glass, glass on the buildings to catch any light! See the girl in the photo? It is August, and she is wearing a heavy coat and hat, it’s that blustery!
The City Hall is supposedly the best, pink building in Norway! Hmmmmmm……I’ll leave it there!
The city center is made up of many, many old buildings and they are beautiful, except for the bins in front! Do you notice anything strange going on? The city is deserted! It’s Sunday, and not a peep open! And, another reason for the desolation is the toll tax on the roads here. I talked a little about that earlier…… In order to encourage the buying of electric cars the road and car taxes were reduced……….so many, many, many folks went out and upgraded to an electric car. The result was not enough money coming in to maintain the roads. So, the government made all the main roads, all over Norway, toll roads………To eliminate paying tolls the developers began building more shopping centers and other necessities away from the city center, and closer to the burbs. This began the downtrend in the cities and the uptick in suburban shopping.
You might want to watch your step here!

I would have had a conniption fit, if this had been my beautiful green house! Who wants a fast-food takeout, literally in their backyard?
We finally saw some movement at the Our Saviour’s Church Door!
We will finish with this lovely building, now a Sushi restaurant! I feel Haugesund has been flayed………trying to keep it all together…..is it a historical city? It could be, if they left their beautiful city intact…….Is it a coastal treasure? It is, if they left their beautiful seaport intact….. or is it the new wasteland of the times?

I love this post. The entrance to the church is magnificent, and a corner door always makes me smile. The houses and buildings all are so beautiful. I have to say that my favorite doors are the ones on the boat.

I like the boat doors. As always, I’m struck by how clean and neat all the buildings are. Your story about the toll roads reminds me of how local governments says they’re taxing let’s say cigarettes to get people to stop smoking for their health. Then cigarette taxes and others are used to pay for stadiums and place where people can’t smoke and if all those people quit smoking, which really would be great for their health, there would be no money coming in from that source and something else would have to be taxed. Heaven forbid that governments should actually spend responsibly and create budgets that they keep.

The details of the bridge and the boat are very attractive. Like the pink, but have to add, it does not look like a city hall:) And I love, love, love that very narrow and pointy tower of the Luth. church! Great post:)

What a beautiful place! Thanks so much for bringing us on this tour. I love the 1910 building with mustard-yellow trim and the cabin doors best, but every photo is fabulous. Hugs on the wing!
