Today, for my Thursday Doors I’m showing you doors from Porvoo, Finland, population 50,000, which is primarily the village of Porvoo and not the OLD TOWN. Located about one hour from Helsinki, it is well worth the trip for the scenery and the delights of this medieval village. I have written a full post about Porvoo HERE, earlier in the week, so, if you want to know what I discovered in Old Town Porvoo, look there first. But, now to the doors in this pastel village located on the Porvoonjoki River.
This is the kind of place I would love to come to with a car and carry off all the antiques to be discovered here! There were no cars allowed in Old Town Porvoo, that I could see. Off one side street, I did see one parked car, squeezed into a spot by a tiny garage.
There was a time when the village of Porvoo had to decide whether it wanted to take the trouble to maintain and repair all the old wooden buildings, or just tear them down. They chose Sustainable Tourism to retain part of their culture……..
Have you noticed all the light and bold pastels colors of the buildings?
One could stay here at Ida-Maria’s B&B!
Now, here is the ladder to maintain the roof…….DO NOT get on it….. I’d like to know what that spiny, thick, fern-like plant under the ladder is too.
Pops of color here and there…..with planters made of useful items from days gone by. I could spend hours looking for old containers, glass, and lanterns!
There was a large meat district here, along with the butcher, was the baker……..
and the antique dealer………
Next to Cafe Pos 3, where 90% of their ingredients are produced ecologically ( I read their sign) There was a big hole and a lot of digging going on. I did not photograph that! Notice too, that all street signs are written in Finnish and Swedish…….
I hope you ave enjoyed the doors of Porvoo! I’m back to Helsinki now to see what hubby has discovered. See you in Helsinki!
Look here to see what others are doing for Norm’s Doors!
It’s easy to do Norm’s Doors. Photograph some doors and post them to Thursday Doors on Thursday!
PS All photos were taken on our IPhones …….we are traveling lighter!
