The Atlanta Connoisseur’s Garden Tour: The Hilltop Garden

It’s our last garden of the day and I hope I can make it up to this hilltop retreat! We have toured six gardens……have you been counting? I didn’t realize how hilly Atlanta would be and many of these gardens have been up, down and around, many acres! But, I’m taking a deep breath, now that I have made it to the top and from this position it should be all down hill…… This home and garden is another designed by the renowned architect, Phillip Stutze. Remember him from another garden post? He is well known for his European style homes and gardens, featuring a sense of balance, scale and proportion. Let’s go in!

The flat portion of the long, long, long driveway weaves around this way……

At the top of the walkway we came to a delightful courtyard with one of the best fountains, I have see so far………  Can you spot it?

It was the copper tree!

I took some time to study the fountain before I went through the gate………. to the shady pond garden.

and then looking on the tennis court……..

We are going downhill now……it’s good to have the lawn dividers, so we don’t roll down the hill………..

The pool and cabana are there at the bottom…….a very relaxing entertainment area……

Between the slope of the hill and the pool/entertainment area is another terraced garden of grass and boxwood and tropical plants………

and a surprise…….a huge and I mean huge fan, that blows over the treetops!

Especially appealing to me was the pattern of this terraced seating area…… You don’t have to fill it in completely with stones to make a very nice pattern………..

Back at the top, I want to get a good look at the copper tree fountain from this angle…………before we leave the garden……

I think my fun meter is full for the day……..

Back to the hotel so I can rest up for the last two gardens for tomorrow! I’ll see you there!

Are these gardens regularly open to the public or just st particular times of the year?

    1. At the second to last garden I had enough time to talk with one of the garden helpers about the selection of gardens. These gardens (there were 9 this year) are selected by the Atlanta Botanical Garden and are toured on just the two selected days that they pick. Every year they select different gardens. More about all that in my next garden post.

  2. Just love the copper tree fountain! It must have looked amazing. What is the purpose of the huge fan? The planters in the pond area are lovely. Nice selection of plants.

    1. I wondered about the fan too. It was a big industrial one. I thought it might be used in two spots, one near the tennis courts when they were playing and the other near the pool. It gets really, really, really, hot and humid here in the summers.

  3. Oh, my! What else can I say? I love the brick walls and iron gates, so typical in many of the older homes in gracious neighborhoods , at least in the Deep South.
