The last SOS that I wrote about MY GARDEN concerned the new fence and all the woes we had! Well the fence and all it entailed has all been completed to our satisfaction and the internet, garden lights and sprinklers are working as they should! To say that we will NEVER replace that fence again is an understatement! So, I am starting in my Woodland Garden this morning and moving to the front with my photos!
The Woodland Garden is looking very green! We added a border to the back small lawn area and planted 30 pulmonaria in the edge. My existing hosta are very small, if the deer would stop eating them they would be much larger……I am surprised every year that any come back!
The Fountain Garden is all newly planted this year………we ripped out all the MONDO GRASS here…….mondo grass serves a purpose and then it grows up and takes over everything! I added ferns, squiggly hosta, mini skirt hosta, coleus, fuchsia and other shade loving plants.
This is a look down the fence line from the back. When the new fence was put in the landscapers and fence-men brought it 6 inches into my garden from the original fence line! Most smallish plants were annihilated along that border! So, just about every small plant is new along the fence. I transplanted plants that I had in big pots and added them along the edge. Now I have a rock garden edge of sorts there where the rocks border the patio………
The only thing that remained of the left section of the garden here was the Creeping Mazus groundcover between the stepping stones near the back. It is continuing to creep! And, I have added many new plants since we decided at this point that so much of this section was a total mess we might as well take out the six big Upright Plum Yews that were along the cottage on the right side and add more flowers. I added many Old House Garden Heirloom bulbs here………many, many irises for next year blooming!
In case you need a reminder of the old fence……….. this is the fence and garden before the new fence was in……… All the plants and shrubs on the left side were damaged during the fence re-construction and had to be replaced. When we took out the Yews we also took out all the Mondo grass along the cottage here too! It gave me more room and made my path look larger.
Here is a closer look at the Gaura, the Mexican Rose and the iris leaves……..now………..
This Indian Feather Gaura is at the bottom end of the fence line and is one of my favorite new plants!

Oh, I went overboard on the hostas this year and put them in the Fern Reserve and the Fountain Garden. They were bulbs I ordered from catalogs. The pointed ones by the fountain are called Squiggly Wiggley and the round ones that curl back around themselves are the Mini Skirt Hostas. I also added some GIANT BIG DADDY and Dancin’ Queen to the Fern Reserve. And some White Feather too. More photos of those in the coming weeks.

WEll whatever the problems with the fence, the garden is now looking fabulous. Sadly I can’t join in as I don’t have a garden, just a wrap around terrace with a few pots of succulents. That said, our block of flats sits in 25 hectacres of lovely grounds tended by the gardeners.

Sheree, how nice to enjoy the gardens in the grounds around your house! Many of the plants that I put in the new very, very, very, narrow space the landscapers left me, were succulents! I was desperate to put anything in that space and had pots of succulents and thought “whatever” I’ll use those for now and wowza they just got bigger and bigger! So I made that area a false rock garden! I don’t know if they will last through the winter however. I have some time now to ponder what to do there if that time comes. That fence was truly a headache!

Absolutely LOVE your woodland garden! Gives me ideas as I continue to develop mine. I have thick English ivy as a ground cover, kept well within bounds with annual pruning to keep it from climbing the birches. Looks charming, in a way, but probably not healthy.

I weed and weed back there so the forest won’t take over! It’s a deer, squirrel, snake, bird paradise!

Your gardens look terrific CLL, especially in the first two photos…all that leafy shade is desirable to me. You must have an abundance of rain where you live. I’m glad the fence saga worked out well.

I’m glad the fence drama is over! Now, I can get on with my summer! We had lots of rain this Spring, which is unusual for us!

Your woodland garden is lovely, a proper woodland unlike my very small imitation ‘woodland’ border. And the fence is charming! I know it has caused you heartache and hassle, but it really does look lovely and what an opportunity to grow new plants! Always look on the bright side 🙂

No, I have a tiny, tiny, tiny section in that area already and that is why I was so upset when i saw it completed. They ignored our concerns when they were putting up the new fence and the property line…..but we were only the owners so what would we know. It cost them so much time and effort because they had to take out the new fence and place it on the proper line after it was completed. Twice as much time and the plantings all along the fence trampled. BUT IT IS OVER NOW!

I agree w/others that the garden is looking good & doesn’t show its recent fence traumas. Love the woodland garden – that path is so inviting! By the fountain, that coleus gives the bed just the perfect pop it needs. Everything would still look good w/o it, but that spot of colour in their leaves, then whatever the red blooms around them are, then just that faint hint of red in the calladiums. Really sets everything off. Bet you’re glad all that work is over – phew!
