Weather: 48 degrees and rainy………….Good Morning! We are getting a good rain this morning, so it’s a good thing we got a lot done yesterday in the garden. I do not know how there could possibly be a leaf left on the ground, but we sacked another 4 bags yesterday and pruned and raked and pruned and raked. On Valentines Day, hubby edged all the walks and around all the flower beds with his Valentine’s Day present from me, an old timey, manual garden edger……………..Well that took some spit and vinegar! He’s the greatest…….I really am married to prince charming! Well let’s walk this morning through the Woodland Garden and see how things are progressing……… I love the red of the newly planted dogwoods and the brightness of the BananAppeal Anise bushes……. my mahonias have bloomed and bloomed more this year than ever!
The hellebores are in their glory too…….I may add a couple more for good measure…….
Now, my pride and joy has to be that the spring bulbs are blooming…….. Is that leaves I see mixed in there? UGH! I never noticed the stripe on these crocus, until I got up very close……. How cool is that?
This is the Chestnut Hyacinths just emerging and they are huge!
The daphne (Hackenberry) seems to be liking it’s spot………….
I was reading an article this week about how much grief Prince Charles was given, a few years back, because he says he talks to his plants, flowers and trees. Well, wouldn’t you know, a group of horticulture folks did an experiment to test if talking to plants changes the plant in any way. They hooked up two groups of tomato plants with microphones to their roots. One set of plants got to listen to Shakespeare, read by a man, and another group listened to a book, I had never heard of, and was read by a woman. Another group of tomato plants got nothing in the way of sound directed at them. The conclusion? The tomato plants that were listening to the woman out-performed the Shakespeare group. The Tomatoes that were read to, far surpassed the non-read to group of tomatoes in growth. The Conclusion: women keep talking to your plants! Ha Ha!

I love that test with the tomatoes. I’m thinking a woman reading Shakespeare might have benefitted the tomatoes yet more. Unless it was Shakespeare they objected to, not the man’s voice!

So I could read selections of Virginia Woolf’s stories, perhaps a garden scene from TO THE LIGHTHOUSE, although Shakespeare penned his fair share, too.

Speaking of Shakespeare,I got yet another book this week! It’s Botanical Shakespeare by Gerit Quealy, and is an illustrated compendium of all the flowers, herbs, fruits, trees, seeds and grasses cited by Shakespeare! I am buying used books on Amazon and really the books I have received look brand new! The books from the UK take a while to get here, but that’s fine with me!

I am so ready for Spring and Summer. March is probably our worst month because it is a rollercoaster of rain, cold, hot, rain cold hotter. But, that is Spring I guess! I have always talked to my plants and I know my neighbors think I must be talking to someone! It’s like talking to someone and they don’t acknowledge you because they are wearing earbuds and listening to music or talking on their phones. Well I’m busy talking to my plants!

When I was working at Cliffe gardens, each morning I would walk into the greenhouse and say “morning all!” to the plants. I think they appreciated it. 🙂

I have to work down there now because as soon as it has warmed up consistently I will break out in hives as soon as I get there! There is something in the air that does not agree with me, and I begin itching immediately. If I ignore it I’m done for! There is poison oak that we kill, but there must be something else!
