If you read yesterday’s post (HERE) we were setting off down the side streets of Hvar. You also will know that Hvar, Croatia was my favorite place to visit on our Mediterranean cruise. To me everything about it was perfect…….the history, the weather, the waterfront, the cafes, the restaurants, the people. As yet, it is unspoiled by tourists and traffic….mostly it is just Croatians that take their vacations here, and they come by boat. There are no cars to be seen here. That’s a two edged sword isn’t it? The people in Croatia want to bring in more money, but in the end the tourists will spoil its simplistic, rustic beauty and lifestyle. But, I won’t think about that today. Let’s see the doors of Hvar! Past the cafes on the waterfront, through the gated walls……….

Past some fancy, colorful, iron doorways at Number Six…….

These folks can always come outside and sit on that little, little bench and pull up to that tiny umbrella table!

You can find a coffee shop right out the front steps………

This would be my perfect house…….. at ponki, well any of these would be perfect to me……

More steps and another freestyle seating area! Go through the new doors and make a left…….to reach the hostel…..

It looks like the town is headed mostly up!

This set of doors and the archway looks very inviting! A little cafe tucked in here and there…………

How about these cosy shared seats?

This was a three-star hotel entrance………

I loved the tree at Number 28………it might need a bigger pot…….

This door has a nice overhang……..just right for a gardener sort…….

Did you notice the one thing all these doors have in common? There are big stone steps to get in them or no steps at all! You would have to be short and not drunk to come out this door!

and a close up of steps …….

and stones……..X marks the spot…………

and I had to show you this water fountain………just because……….

Now what is up this way?

Oh yes, up to the Croatian version of Romeo and Juliet…………..It seems there were families here that didn’t think too much of the other……and of course the young folks fell in love…………he from his side of the street to glimpse at her on her side……

Very nice neighborhood still…………..

and back this way we see…………lots of arrows……….pointing the way……

At this intersection we had to go left or right of this little church……..

We’ve made it up to the Benedictine Monastery, where the nuns make tatted lace.

This lace costs thousands, not hundreds, but thousands of Croatian dollars. No credit cards accepted, only Croatian currency ……I asked…

This is what the church cellar looks like………..looks like they keep everything nice and tidy………

We’ve made our way back to the square and are looking at St Stephen’s Cathedral………..

and looking this way we can see another church……. Can there ever be too many churches?

Let’s pop in here and look around….. I wished I would have asked what the square tiles were. Old signs for addresses? We saw them on quite a few of the buildings……..

Looking back through the door………..

And another post I wrote on Hvar was on the hunks that were there……girls if you like tall, good looking men, this is the place to come! I’ll stop now on that note!

See you next week in another port!
Have a great door week! Look here to see what others are doing for Norm’s Doors!
It’s easy to do Norm’s Doors. Photograph some doors and post them to Thursday Doors on Thursday!
PS All photos were taken on our IPhones this year……..we are traveling lighter!
Great pictures: houses, doors, steps, and all that Jazz.

I can see, many many stairs! I love the balconies and the arched doorways! That 3 story house (with the shirts in front) is so cute! My, that lace is incredible – is it handmade?

Yep, by the nuns!

I don’t know how that rather large tree fits in that relatively small pot and doesn’t tip over about 17 times a day 😀
Hvar is a stunningly beautiful old town. Great shots and thank you for the tour. I’m glad you were there to guide me around because I don’t think I could’ve managed all those stairs on my own.
