Thursday Doors: Amalfi, Italy

We are hot……….it is early morning and it is hot………….but we have looked forward to getting to Amalfi and it should be hot in the middle of the summer right? But, still I am really hot! As I look out from our balcony on the ship I think there should be lots of doors here. Let’s go and find out…………..   Is it going to be all uphill?

Amalfi, Italy

It’s really steep…………

Amalfi sits on the side of steep, sheer cliffs…………..

It is getting warmer and warmer and the sweat is now dripping off my chin………..and I’m not even off the tender yet!

It is early Sunday morning and everyone is at the beach already! I guess I am not the only one hot!

“Finally,” you say, “a door.” When on Amalfi you get the beach door first.

Our main objective was not the beach, but Saint Andrew Cathedral, until I saw the steps. How many are there? Sixty-two, might as well be six hundred and sixty-two today.  Hmmmm……. the beach looked more inviting at this point. My hair is starting to curl from my sweat………

But, I’m committed now. I’ve seen the door…….I need a door photo for Norm.

St Andrew Cathedral, Amalfi, Italy

A really big, solid, green-blue door………….with lots of marble curlicues and brass lion pulls.

More ornateness on the inside. (More about this cathedral in another post) I am just doing doors today, because I am hot.

I’ll throw in a gate too.

And some closed off doors from years past.

Some faces of the saints have been removed. The guide states it is from the Muslim invasion. I think they melted from the heat……..

Another fancy gate door.

I liked the marble on the walls, but the cathedral is so warm. Is that an escape door?

Or maybe this way……….

We’re out in the open air again. How about a nice toilet area with doors?

Or gate doors tucked away in the bougainvillea.

or doors at the out-door restaurants……….

or doors carved into the mountainside.

We are going back to the pier now….it is simply too hot and we have more to see today.

Have a great door week! Look here to see what others are doing for Norm’s Doors!

It’s easy to do Norm’s Doors. Photograph some doors and post them to Thursday Doors on Thursday!

PS All photos were taken on our IPhones this year……..we are traveling lighter!

  1. We visited this beautiful place in the spring several years ago, and I am still in awe of the beautiful surroundings. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. 🙂

Cool! We were there in late September and it was still hot and crawling with tourists. You’ll see some of my doors from the same place in a few weeks. The climb up all of those stairs to the church is worth it 😀

  4. WE haven’t been to Amalfi, but your photos remind us a lot of what we saw in Cinque Terre — small homes built on steep terrain, blue ocean, boats and people everywhere — many taking pictures as we did. What a lovely place you’ve shared!

    1. Did you get your charms from Cinque Terre? We had fun collecting them! Corneglia was our favorite there!

      1. We had no idea there were charms there. Our guide didn’t say anything about them. Would have loved that!

  5. Gorgeous and well worth your effort (at least from my POV.) 🙂 I especially like the shot of the gate with the bougainvillea! That beach is way to crowded for me, though.

    1. That beach was packed to the gills by the time we boarded a ferry to Positano at noon!
