This post is the Third in a Series about Columbus, Georgia! I am so enjoying this excursion and today we are looking at more Doors for the Thursday Doors. First there is THE SIGN. Please follow all the rules when visiting Heritage Park or any other park for that matter. We want to keep it nice. And Heritage Park and the Historic District are two of the nicest places to visit in Columbus, Georgia. There are SIX National Register Historic DISTRICTS……..that’s right, SIX DISTRICTS of heritage and historic properties.  Columbus has one of the largest continuous districts in the country that form the Heart of Midtown. Tree lined streets meander among ante-bellum estates, through 1930’s and 1940’s bungalow districts to mid-20th-century ranch neighborhoods and then to some of the cities earliest and recently revitalized shopping areas.

We’re in for a treat here! Let’s see the Doors I found on today’s outing!

This city is chock full of meaningful signs, monuments and art work of every kind. Another blog post about art work to come, but first look closely at the front of nearly every house here……………

I wanted to show you the fountain in this neighborhood, but look closely and you will discover that just about every house here has a historical sign in the front! What a fantastic place! Can you imagine? Something took place at all these homes!

You know you are in the South when there is a large porch to sit on, and the front yard is small and close to the street, so you can see and talk to your neighbors. The plantings are many, mostly camellias and tropicals here, and featured inside a wrought iron fence line.

Oh yes, urns are a big plus too. You can never have enough potted plants! Many of the homes also reveal what time period they are from……….

The urns at Number Six looks a little bedraggled and you can see I was here in the fall. But, they still have the porch, the shutters and the transom over the door way. A transom is a window above a door or another window, that was usually on a hinge. You opened it to let out the rising hot air! The first air conditioning!

Columbus wasn’t always so cozy. Colonel Salisbury, the editor of the Enquirer-Sun Newspaper, was gunned down, shot in the back by a man, who had sued him for libel and won.  The man was awarded one cent, which he thought added insult to injury, so he followed Salisbury to the train station, where he shot him. Oh my! You can read the sign to see his famed achievements.

I had to add this photo. First, Columbus still has gas lights. Two, they still have overhead power lines (most cities bury them underground these days) and three, Colonel Salisbury also got a war memorial for serving in the Confederacy.

With an urn on top. You probably are aware of the statues and monuments that reflect the South during the Civil War and the movement to have them taken down. Columbus is very proud of all of it’s heritage!

Then to the bungalows of the 30’s and 40’s……….

This house and set of doors were my favorite. The door on the left is for a stairway to a second story, which is a separate address. What would you call that color? Peachy-coral?

I don’t know what to call this color either…….and I would not want to have to paint all that fancy trim……..in multiple colors no less.

and it looks like the brick sidewalk was closer to the house at one time…….

I hope you have enjoyed our Doors today and this fabulous part of the city of Columbus.  One home I didn’t find, was the home of Dr. John S Pemberton,  the pharmacist, who developed Coca-Cola! He has a statue to look for too! I will have to come back!
