WeekendCaféShare: Where Did All the Wind Come From?

If we were having coffee today we most likely would be inside enjoying a cuppa and Inside-Out Carrot Cake Muffins! Yum! Just what we need to keep us from blowing away in these gale winds! We enjoyed our spring in January and February and now that March has roared in we get to have our Winter! High in the 50’s here! Brr…… My plum tree bloomed for about two days, then all the petals blew off and now it is trying to leaf after the rain we got. Oh well, that is Spring, but I liked our Winter weather better, didn’t you? So what have you been doing to keep yourself busy? Any good books lately? Watching any good TV shows?

I hadn’t watched any TV since the weather had turned nice, but then I went on my favorite channel, Acorn. If it was up to me we would not need any of the other channels, they are the same ol’ same ol’.  News, sex, violence, sports, over and over, the same stuff! So I watch British TV on Acorn. I love the documentaries, Agatha Christie mysteries and most of the series, actually. This week I started watching A Place to Call Home! I should have never started! Well, I should have actually and it was so good I watched all 4 years worth! It is Downton Abbey-like except filmed in Australia in the 1950’s! The story line is excellent, you just can’t wait to see the next episode. The scenery is gorgeous and the costumes fabulous. It is very addictive as you can well tell if I watched all the episodes right after another! And after Season 2, well Season 2 for us, the show wrapped up very nicely, all turmoil concluded, and an ending that had everyone living happily ever after, followed by The End. What? My Acorn said there was more to Series 2 and a Series 3 and 4. So I clicked on the next episode and went on. The first thing that popped up on the screen was that in the last episode they had decided to conclude the series mid season in Series 2. There was such an uproar from the fans (I guess, what else could it be?) they decided to come back and run the last episode again, this time with a very different ending! AND continue the series. Yes, we were not nearly done with A Place to Call Home, were we? It had a nice, lovely, tidy ending, but the only trouble was, nobody wanted it to end! My favorite characters are Elizabeth, played by Noni Hazelhurst (what a corker she is), and Regina, played by Jenni Baird, (ruthless)!  These women are very good actresses and really are cast well in their roles! So, I can say the entire series is not like any other! It is also a reminder of the protocols for life in the 50’s, and how people have changed in their views. I may have to watch it again, it was sooooooo good! Maybe the weather needed to be a bummer for a few days! Do any of my Australian coffee friends know the real reason why the series ended the first time in series 2?  Did  an actor hold out for more money? Did an actor not want to be killed off?  Were the actors tired of the series? Did someone think that they were typecast and would never get past their role? Enquiring minds would like to know!

Love Acorn and the shows it carries. I will have to check out A Place to Call Home. I could use a new binge series. 🙂 It is currently being shown on one of the local PBS stations but I didn’t start watching because I had missed several episodes.

    1. Oh it’s good Marie! I didn’t think clothes in the 50’s were all that special, but the clothes in this series makes you want to buy a big fluffy white underskirt and a tiny hat!

Those muffin/cupcake (I figure when there’s icing involved, we are not allowed to call them muffins! 🙂 )
